Slovakia is a parliamentary democratic republic and divided into eight regions call kraje. It has had a history of integration and takeover by various tribes and empires. After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, which peacefully ended communist rule in Czechoslovakia, there followed the dissolution of the state of Czechoslovakia and the subsequent independence of the states of Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Slovakia’s economy benefits most from the service sector, but industry is important. Slovakia is one of the highest car manufacturing countries in Europe, and electrical engineering is also an important industry.
Tourism is strong and foreign visitors tend to be from the neighbouring states of Czechia, Poland and Germany.
Right at the heart of Europe and with a history entwined with that of its neighbours, Slovakia has nevertheless retained its very distinct culture and language.
