New Zealand – Quick Facts
Situated in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, New Zealand lies about 1200 miles east of Australia, across the Tasman Sea. It is made up of two main islands, North Island and South Island, and over 700 smaller islands. Its nearest neighbours are Fiji, Tonga and New Caledonia. The capital city is Wellington.
It is thought that New Zealand was one of the last ever land masses to have been settled by humans.
It is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy, divided into sixty-seven territorial authorities and eleven regional councils. The Realm of New Zealand, is a commonwealth realm and includes Tokelau, the Ross Dependency (in Antarctica), the Cook Islands and Niue. Although New Zealand does not have full governance over these places it has strong constitutional ties and the nationality law treats the citizens as New Zealanders.
A wealthy nation, with an advanced economy, New Zealand ranks highly in international country comparisons, such as quality of life. The majority of inhabitants live on the North Island and urban living is dominant. Over two thirds of the population is of European descent, with the Maori population the largest minority.
Over the years, New Zealand has moved from an agrarian economy to one which is strong in the service sector. Tourism is a very important part of the economy. New Zealand relies heavily on international trade.
Culturally, New Zealand is influenced by Maori culture and Pakeha (European New Zealand) culture. Maori influences are particularly present in art, architecture, music and musical instruments. The national sport is Rugby and the Maori haka is part of New Zealand culture when it is performed by the All Blacks team.
New Zealand is a member of a number of organisations- including the United Nations, the Commonwealth of Nations and ANZUS.
