Map Data for
Ukraine
Ukraine – Quick Facts
Ukraine is situated in eastern Europe and bordered by Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova. It is Europe’s second largest country; the capital city is Kyiv.
Since independence in 1991, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine has been a unitary republic, with a semi-presidential system. It is divided into twenty-seven administrative regions. While Russia and Ukraine share common historical origins, the western part of Ukraine holds much closer ties with its European neighbours. Consequently, it is a country veering between western European integration, and the view of Russia which sees its own interests somewhat threatened.
It is a developing country and one of the poorest in Europe. Severe corruption has hindered development. The most populated areas are the industrial east and south-east and higher levels of people live in urban rather than rural communities. Industry and the service sector are the key contributors to the economy. Industries include metals and chemicals, and the IT sector is a growing area.
Ukrainian culture is influenced by Orthodox Christianity, with strong traditions continuing though music, art and weaving. Literature and architecture have been notably influenced by the distant past, as well as communism. Since independence, literary freedoms have increased.
Ukraine is a member of the United Nations and the Council of Europe.
