Map Data for
Serbia
Serbia – Quick Facts
The landlocked Republic of Serbia lies at the crossroads of central and south-eastern Europe, and borders Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Bulgaria and North Macedonia. Belgrade is the capital city.
Serbia has been occupied or formed part of numerous empires throughout its history. Upon the dissolution of Yugoslavia in 1991, Serbia formed a union with Montenegro, which was dissolved peacefully in 2006, when both states reclaimed their independence.
Serbia is a unitary parliamentary constitutional republic, divided into municipalities, districts and provinces. Serbia has a shrinking population, and also one of the oldest populations in the world. Since 2007, it has observed a policy of military neutrality.
It has an emerging market economy and has benefitted from much foreign investment. Serbia’s economy is skewed towards the service sector, but industry, especially food, automotive and agriculture are all important sectors and employers. Unlike many of its neighbours, tourism has yet to emerge as an important industry.
Culturally quite mixed, Serbia sits at the juncture of the old Ottoman and Hapsburg European influences. It has an array of architecture and a strong musical, literary and theatrical tradition. Serbia has one of the most dynamic film industries.
On the world stage, Serbia is a member of the United Nations and is a candidate for membership of the European Union.
