The Netherlands (commonly known as Holland) is situated in western Europe, bordering Belgium and Germany, and with a North Sea coastline. The Netherlands comprises twelve provinces. The Netherlands has a strong and diverse cultural heritage from its foundation as an important maritime, commercial and exploratory nation. Art, literature, music and entertainment are of particular renown, and this prevails today. Its flower industry has a worldwide reputation. Rating consistently high on the World Happiness Index the Netherlands is known as one of the most liberal and free-spirited nations in the world.
On the international stage the Netherlands is a member of the United Nations, NATO and a founding member of the European Union.
