Hungary – Quick Facts
A landlocked state situated in central Europe, Hungary shares borders with Ukraine, Slovakia, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Austria. Hungarian is the most widely spoken Uralic language in the world. The capital city is Budapest.
For centuries, Hungary was one of Europe’s superpowers. However, the immense political upheaval and uncertainty post World War I devastated Hungary, culminating in it becoming a Soviet satellite state after World War II, until independence in 1989.
It is now a unitary democratic parliamentary republic, and divided into nineteen counties, with Budapest remaining an independent area. It is an urbanised nation, with a quarter of the population living in the greater Budapest area.
The Hungarian economy is one of the fastest growing in Europe, with Budapest the primary hub. It has a significant service sector; of particular note are tourism and mobile technology. Industry remains important, especially pharmaceuticals, food processing and automotive. Agriculture still contributes to the economy.
Hungary has a culturally diverse heritage. It is a country of spa waters and is famous for its thermal baths. It has important influence in architecture, music, art, science and technology and sport. Its literature is gaining popularity in countries outside Hungary.
On the world stage it is a member of the United Nations, NATO, and the European Union.
