Georgia
Georgia – Quick Facts
Situated at the strategically important crossroads where Europe meets Asia, Georgia has a unique and ancient heritage. It is situated in the Caucasus region, and bordered by Russia, Turkey, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The capital and largest city is Tbilisi.
Following secession from the Soviet Union in 1991, Georgia is now a unitary parliamentary republic, which is divided into nine regions, one city and two autonomous republics, namely Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Georgia’s economic reforms have been geared towards making it a free-market economy. It has faced economic collapse, but survived and is now one of the faster growing economies in the region. Tourism and agriculture, especially wine-making and citrus fruit, are significant sectors for the Georgian economy, with gold, manganese and copper mining remaining important. Urbanisation is increasing and despite migration after independence, the population remains steady.
Georgian culture has been influenced by Ancient Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Iranian civilizations as well as the Russian Empire. Its musical culture is distinctive and there is a strong Georgian style within ecclesiastical art and architecture.
Georgia is a member of the United Nations and is applying for full NATO and European Union membership.
