Bosnia and Herzegovina
Bosnia and Herzegovina – Quick Facts
Bordered by Serbia, Montenegro and Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Balkan country, located in south-eastern Europe. The capital city is Sarajevo.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has a wealth of mixed political, social and cultural history, having been settled or annexed by numerous peoples over the centuries, and finally gaining independence in 1992, after the dissolution of Yugoslavia. Following the Bosnian War, and peace in 1995, the country became a bicameral legislature, with a three-member presidency, representing each ethnic group - Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. Bosnia and Herzegovina is divided into two autonomous entities, plus one district, with the autonomous Federation of Bosnia-Herzegovina divided into ten cantons. The government is largely decentralised.
Considered a developing country, Bosnia and Herzegovina relies heavily on its industrial and agricultural sectors, followed by service industry and growing tourism.
Culturally and ethnically very diverse, it has a rich heritage in art, music and literature. It has a thriving cinema scene and hosts a number of film and literature festivals.
On the world stage, Bosnia and Herzegovina is a member of the United Nations, an applicant for European Union membership and a candidate for NATO membership.
