UK Radon Potential

Understand and manage radon exposure in UK homes & workplaces

Every building contains radon but the levels are usually low. In some parts of the country, however, levels are higher. Where this is the case, it may be necessary to take action. This would include identifying, measuring and mitigating exposure to reduce health risks.

UK Radon Potential - Periodic Table

Why is radon risk important?

Radon is a colourless, odourless and tasteless radioactive gas. It is formed by the decay of the small amounts of uranium that occur naturally in all rocks and soils. Levels of radon vary throughout the country and will dissipate easily outside. Buildings, however, have a chimney effect and will naturally draw up air from the ground which may contain radon and allow it to seep into our homes and workplaces. A high radon exposure can have serious health implications.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) recommends that radon levels should be reduced in homes where the annual average is at or above 200 becquerels per cubic metre (200Bq/m3) — this is termed the “radon action level”. UKHSA defines radon affected areas as “those with one per cent chance or more of a house having a radon concentration at or above the radon action level”.

UK Radon Potential

UK Radon Potential shows where higher levels of exposure are likely in the United Kingdom. The data can be used to provide an answer to one of the standard legal search enquiries (CON29) during house purchase and the level of protection required for extensions and new builds.

Radon Potential is the definitive map data set of radon-affected areas in the United Kingdom and a valuable tool in understanding and mitigating risk. It was created jointly by the British Geological Survey (BGS), Health Protection Agency (HPA), Public Health England (PHE) and Geological Survey Northern Ireland (GSNI) using long-term radon measurements, made in over 479,000 homes across Great Britain and 23,000 homes across Northern Ireland, combined with geological map data.

The product is a polygon-based vector data set at 1:50k scale, making it suitable for local to region level analysis. It is available in all major GIS data formats.
