The Republic of Kosovo is a partially recognised defacto state in south-eastern Europe. In the heart of the Balkans and landlocked, Kosovo is bordered by Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania and Montenegro. The capital city is Pristina.
Kosovo’s past has been chequered; it is a province which has moved between empires over centuries. In the late nineteenth century, Kosovo was at the centre of the Albanian National Movement and was ceded by the Ottomans to Serbia and Montenegro after the Balkan War. Post WWI, both Serbia and Montenegro became part of Yugoslavia. After WWII, Yugoslavia established the Autonomous Province of Kosovo and Metohija, within Serbia. Tensions were rumbling between Kosovo’s Albanian and Serb population for years, at times violently. After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, these tensions became more acute and culminated in the Kosovan War 1998-99. This resulted in the arrival of the UN Interim Administrative Mission in Kosovo. In 2008, Kosovo declared independence from Serbia. Kosovo was recognised with diplomatic status as a sovereign state by 97 member states of the United Nations. Serbia does not recognise Kosovo as an independent state.
Kosovo is now a multi-party parliamentary representative democracy and is divided into seven districts which are further divided into 38 municipalities. It is a secular state. Ethnically diverse, the two largest groups are Albanians and Serbs. The official languages are Albanian and Serbian with institutions committed to recognising each equally.
With years of turmoil in its wake, the Kosovan economy is a developing one. Its arable sector is very strong and it is an established wine producer, exporting to Germany and the USA. The production of electricity is seen as the industrial sector with the most potential. Kosovo has significant deposits of metals and minerals. Although not a developed sector, with its rich topography, Kosovo does have tourist potential as an all-season destination.
Much of the architectural heritage of Kosovo, both Byzantine in style and vernacular, was destroyed during the war. Its art is relatively unknown but is beginning to gain exposure. Music is diverse and authentic Albanian and Serb music is still played, as well as influences on the modern music scene. Sport is a very important part of Kosovan culture. The movie scene is being reinvigorated and Kosovo hosts film festivals.
Kosovo is a member of the IMF, The World Bank and has applied for membership of Interpol.
