The Republic of Panama is situated in Central America, right at the crossroads of the continents of North and South America. It shares land borders with Costa Rica and Colombia, and coastline along the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea. The capital is Panama City.
Inhabited by indigenous tribes until the arrival of the Spanish in the 1500s, Panama gained independence from the Spanish Empire in 1821 and joined the Republic of Gran Colombia, seceding in 1903. Panama is now a presidential representative democratic republic, divided into ten provinces.
The strategic significance of Panama’s location has ensured its attention from USA. It was with American support that Panama successfully parted from Gran Colombia. As a result, Panama allowed US Army Engineers to undertake the construction of the Panama Canal, which was completed in 1914. It remained under US control until 1999.
Revenue from the canal is a massive contributor to Panama’s growing economy, with around 15,000 vessels every year using the waterway to move between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. The service sector is a growing addition to the economy, especially banking, commerce and tourism. Controlled mining for copper and gold is also important.
Around 40% of Panama’s land is covered in jungle - the second largest rainforest in the western hemisphere. Heavily urbanised, half of Panama’s population lives in and around Panama City. Despite its growing economy, there is a marked disparity between rich and poor. It retains infamy as a tax haven and for drug trafficking.
With strong European and American influences, Panama’s national sport is baseball. Music is European in influence but strong folk tradition endures.
On the world stage Panama is a member of the United Nations and the Organisation of American States.
