Macau (or Macao) is officially the Macao Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China. It is, like Hong Kong a city and special administrative region (SAR), situated in the western Pearl Delta of China’s southern coast by the South China Sea. Macau is 32 miles west of Hong Kong and is the most densely populated region in the world.
Part of the Ming dynasty’s lands, Macau was leased to Portugal in the mid-1500s. Portugal later gained colonial rights and Macau was under Portuguese rule until 1999, when it was transferred to China.
As a special administrative region of China, Macau follows the ‘’one country, two systems’’ approach, and maintains separate governing and economic systems. It is governed by an executive-led system, reflecting rule from its days as a Portuguese colony. Macau is divided into seven parishes for governing purposes.
Macau’s economy is a service economy based on casino gambling and tourism. Casino u[gambling is illegal in mainland China and Hong Kong, thereby giving Macau a regional monopoly. Its gambling industry is seven times larger than Las Vegas. Tourism wealth is largely based on Chinese tourists heading to the “Las Vegas of the East”. The importance of export manufacturing (cotton textiles, toys and electronics) to Macau’s economy has declined, although it is still a nominal contributor.
Highly urbanised, two-thirds of the land built on in Macau has been reclaimed from the sea. Per capita Macau is a wealthy region, but despite this, there is a marked wealth disparity. The merging of Chinese and Portuguese style, religions and traditions has contributed towards a rich culture. Architecturally fascinating, the unique blend of architectural styles in Macau’s centre led to its inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005. However, there is much criticism levied against urban planners in Macau and their failure to protect this architectural heritage. The uniqueness of marrying Portuguese and Chinese heritage is evident in the cuisine of Macau. Sport is important and Macau has hosted a number of major sporting events, including the Macau Grand Prix.
Macau has six sister-cities around the world as well as a number of cultural affiliations with other cities.
