Situated at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, and sharing a land border with Spain, Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory. Strategically it has been regarded as a significant position and has been taken over by various nations - Spain, the Netherlands and Britain. It remains a point of contention within British and Spanish relations, despite a referendum in 2002 rejecting shared sovereignty. The de facto capital city is Westside.
It is virtually entirely self-governed. The population is very mixed and although only around 32,000 inhabitants, Gibraltar is one of the most densely populated territories in the world and because of this, it has poor air quality.
Gibraltar has virtually no natural resources and little freshwater. Its economy is driven by tourism, banking and gambling.
Due to the UK’s departure, Gibraltar is no longer a member of the European Union.
