Europa Technologies has today announced further enhancements to the viaEuropa hosted map service. The pioneering service which enables organisations to utilise complex Ordnance Survey digital map data as a hosted base map, now adds support for the British National Grid system in addition to the popular “spherical Mercator” projection. The combination of support for these two systems enables widespread use across internal desktop and server mapping applications, together with broad deployment using web mapping APIs such as Bing Maps and Google Maps. Importantly, the ability to consume the service using either of these systems means that organisations do not have to reproject their own asset data to fit the base map, a process which can often lead to offsets between assets and the real world features they should align with on the base map.
At the same time, Europa Technologies is pleased to confirm support for the WMS-C standard in the viaEuropa service. WMS-C is a constrained version of WMS which allows the use of a cache to optimise performance. This extends the list of standards that can be used to exploit the service (already including TMS and WMTS), thereby enabling organisations to quickly and easily consume the service using reliable and documented standards. Importantly, support for WMS-C enables users of legacy applications which support WMS (but not the more modern TMS or WMTS) to make use of the viaEuropa service.
Duncan Hill, Business Development Manager of Europa Technologies, comments: “We are delighted to announce these further enhancements to the viaEuropa service. Together with our recent inclusion in the G-Cloud III programme, we believe that these developments will make it even easier for our clients to use and re-use the service, making further cost savings and efficiency gains in the process.”
